Holey Mask: Piece #3 of The Composer Challenge

Holey Mask: Piece #3 of The Composer Challenge

What is there to say about this piece? Everything, and nothing, both at once.

This week, I listened to Debussy’s Syrinx and Varese’s Density 21.5 and decided to model a solo flute piece after them.

It didn’t go well.

Let me tell you, I struggled more this week than I did last week. And while I’m at it, let me admit failure. I didn’t compose every single day. I couldn’t bring myself to do it.

Even if I did….it wouldn’t have mattered. The material I was coaxing to come out all week was scrapped tonight.

I wrote the above piece in about 45 minutes after a conversation with my friend Isabelle. In part, I think this piece belongs to her too. It wouldn’t exist without her.

I’m glad this week is over and I have something to show for it. I have no clue what piece I’m starting tomorrow, but whatever it is, it HAS to be easier than this week has been, right? I guess we’ll see.
