Uncharted Waters
“What do you want to be when you grow up? What do you want to do with your life? What is your career of choice?”
Can I be honest? These questions have made me want to throw up the past few months. I mean of course, the answer is music; it has always been music. But just like all the different kinds of cheeses there are out there, the selection of music jobs is seemingly never-ending. When it comes to exactly what I want to do inside the field of music, my answer seems to change with the direction of the wind. Orchestra conductor. Studio musician. Record producer. Jazz singer. When I was a trumpet major, I was dead-set on playing 2nd trumpet in Broadway pit orchestras. After I discovered that my mouth was shaped in a way that I would always struggle to squeak out high C’s and D’s, I put this dream to rest.
Each opportunity that presented itself these past four years has caused me to tune into my instincts and use what I’ve decided to call my “inner magnet.” With each new circumstance that life presented, I tried to discern if I felt a “magnetic pulling” toward my calling, or if there was unseen friction, a sort of “repeling” against what felt most right in my soul. Sometimes the answer would be obvious; other times, not so much. On some occasions, the answer would change as time passed. But whatever the case, it has helped me get to where I am now.
Where am I now?
I am heading into my final year at university, trying to figure out what to do next. These are uncharted waters. I could easily take a standard path that people at this stage in life pursue, but what’s the fun in that? Certainly, there would be nothing wrong with going to grad school or settling down to a comfortable job– but that’s not where I see my life going. I don’t know where it’s going…but if you’re along for the ride, I plan to document it on this cozy little blog I’ve built for myself. In the meantime, I’ll continue doing things that fill my life with happiness and purpose: working on my craft, teaching others about the secrets of music, and growing as a music director and worship leader at my favorite church in Pensacola.
